History Made at Bacon County Hospital and Health System

On March 18, 2008 the Bacon County Hospital and Health System's Operating Room made history. Dr. Randall O'Brien and OR staff performed the very first total hip and knee replacement surgeries. A 66 year old Nicholls man had knee replacement surgery and a 64 year old Blackshear man had hip replacement surgery. Mr. Melvin Groover (knee replacement) of Nicholls Georgia stated while being interviewed by the local papers, " The staff here at this hospital are very kind and courteous. I've been in several hospitals for different reasons, and I'd recommend Bacon County Hospital and Health System over the larger ones."

Two months of planning for these cases included everything from staff education to purchasing instruments and supplies needed for the procedures. The implants used for these procedures were made by Zimmer, a world leading manufacturer of orthopedic products and instruments.

Providing these services here at home will keep our patients from having to travel far distances to receive these surgeries. We also have rehabilitation available in-house instead of sending our patients to another facility during their rehab phase.
